Addiction….the itch, the craving, the constant thought of taking one more drive with that thing, one more shot at it. Addiction, the never ending want for something. As humans, we go through different stages in life, each stage with its challenges. How we deal with them determines how much we grow. Being addicted to something or someone is normal for us, that telenovela serie, that person you can’t take your mind off of etc. looking at most common addictions most people fall prey to. How far are we willing to go, to control them?

1. DRUGS

“Drug addicts are so funny that way, just spinning around, lost in their own little world. Doing so much, accomplishing so little, how sad.”    James St. James.

At the top of our list, is the chief of it all, illegal drugs. It has gained its influence on the world for a very long time now. Is it Marijuana with street name, blunt, skunk, weed? Is it Heroin, cocaine, ecstasy, all an escape from the realities of life? But after the effect, what follows? Depression, Memory loss, Nausea, Is it worth it?

2. SEX, PORN OR MASTURBATION

We’re humans and biologically wired as sexual beings. Sex; To some, an addiction, to others a regular moderate thing. Are you addicted to sex, porn or self-servicing? You are not alone! When it affects your daily life, work, school, and all you think about is one more round and still not getting satisfied, it becomes an issue, an addiction.

3. THE INTERNET

Oops! I said it but true. A subject we will not soon forget, now or anytime in the future perhaps. It has become the future, with vast streams of information being passed through it, is it doing more bad than good? Social media(Facebook, Instagram, Twitter etc), Google, YouTube etc, with most of our youths fully associated with it, and a world where everything is being done through the internet; your bank transactions, your online shopping, online dating, funny videos, checking the latest news, even this blog you’re reading right now, lol. Most people spend most of their time online, even when at work, school, while in traffic, or when having a boring day. It’s an addiction that has become normal and is not going away anytime soon.

4. GAMBLING

Is it in a local betting centre or in a casino? The drive to make quick and easy money is an addiction many can’t seem to get control over. Sometimes luck falls on you and you make a quick buck or two, but sometimes you lose all you have, bet what you borrowed and still lose more, get into trouble. How much of a gambler are you? Are you addicted?

5. ALCOHOL

“Alcohol is not in my vodkabulary, however I looked it up on Whiskeypedia and learned if you drink too much of it, it’s likely Tequilya.”

Legal high across the world, escape from troubled reality, to celebrate a joyful situation or to change reality when things are looking boring. How many shots gets you there? Is it healthy when you become addicted, simple no, better safe than sorry. Take the control it has over you away, because health risks might follow that you’re not prepared to face in this beautiful world of ours, so be gentle with it.

6. FOOD

Not forgetting the easiest thing to be addicted to which is just like an arm’s reach from us, Fooooood, especially junk food.

Just like drugs, research has found that it involves the same areas of the brain being stimulated and the same neurotransmitters. Do you eat to a moderate level, or to a level where you get stuffed with so much food? Don’t let it be an addiction, Obesity, type 2 diabetes, heart disease, Cancer and depression are possible physical harm that might follow a longtime food addict. But the craving for that piece of chicken wing, that cheese burger, is always there right? We can control it if we keep trying at least.

“Food is the most abused anxiety drug. Exercise is the most underutilized antidepressant.”

7. SMOKING

There goes our last but not the least, Smohhhhhhhhking!

Looks cool tho! But Sad fact is….(Drumrolls please! Gosh!)….It might KILL YA!
‘NICOTINE, the substance in cigarette smoke, is inhaled by the smoker, enters the bloodstream through the lungs and reaches the brain within 10 seconds of inhalation.’ according to our friends from quitnow. Now, due to the high you get from it, the relaxing feeling, the chill vibe and improved concentration, it easily becomes a habit, One MORE cig. This makes it hard for people to let go, knowing the health implications involved, like heart disease, infertility, erectile disfunction, cancer etc even when the Cig Company tells you ‘Smokers are liable to die young’, lol. It is one of the most addictive and the risk of developing dependence on it is far greater than risk of developing dependence on marijuana, cocaine, following its initial use. This should be first as it is more commonly done in public and sooooo addictive, but as the saying goes, ‘save the best for last’.

Addictions are those habits we can’t seem to have control over, but with constant try, we can, and in that process, create better lives for ourselves. It’s nothing to be ashamed about, No ONE is PERFECT! Bye for now.

WHAT’S YOUR ADDICTION?
